# Quickstart

> Make your first Artemis API request in under a minute

## 1. Get your key

Sign in at [artemis.ai](https://www.artemis.ai), click your user profile in the top right, and open **Settings**. Your API key is listed there. See [API Key](https://artemis.ai/docs/artemis-api/api-key.md) if you don't have one.

Export it. Query strings end up in shell history, proxy logs and CI logs:

```bash theme={null}
export ARTEMIS_API_KEY="your-key-here"
```

## 2. Make a request

Kalshi's open interest for a single day:

```bash theme={null}
curl -s "https://data-svc.artemisxyz.com/v2/data/OPEN_INTEREST?symbols=kalshi&startDate=2026-08-01&endDate=2026-08-01&APIKey=$ARTEMIS_API_KEY"
```

```json theme={null}
{
  "series_columns": ["timestamp", "value"],
  "series": [
    {
      "asset": "kalshi",
      "metric": "OPEN_INTEREST",
      "metric_display_name": "Open Interest",
      "data": [[1785542400000, 700293307.0]],
      "display_name": "Kalshi",
      "color": "#01C685"
    }
  ]
}
```

`$700.3M` of open interest. `series_columns` tells you each `data` tuple is `[timestamp, value]`, with the timestamp in epoch milliseconds.

## 3. The same in Python

```python theme={null}
import os
import requests
resp = requests.get(
    "https://data-svc.artemisxyz.com/v2/data/OPEN_INTEREST,SPOT_VOLUME",
    params={
        "symbols": "kalshi,polymarket",
        "startDate": "2026-07-25",
        "endDate": "2026-08-01",
        "APIKey": os.environ["ARTEMIS_API_KEY"],
    },
    timeout=60,
)
resp.raise_for_status()
for s in resp.json()["series"]:
    latest = s["data"][-1]
    print(f"{s['display_name']:12} {s['metric']:14} {latest[1]:,.0f}")
```

## 4. Find the metric you actually want

You now know the pattern. The remaining question is always *which metric name and which symbol*. That's what [Discovery](https://artemis.ai/docs/artemis-api/discovery.md) and the sector pages answer.

> Read [Core concepts](https://artemis.ai/docs/artemis-api/core-concepts.md) before you build anything real. It covers the handful of behaviours that surprise people, including why open interest must never be summed.
